In the past few years, geckos have entered into our households only by means of an advertising icon for the insurance company Geico, but who would have thought that this same little creature would have been traditional as an inspiration for scientists to develop a waterproof bandage.

The toes of the gecko adhere to a wide variety of surfaces, without the use of liquids or any surface tension. And now U.S. researchers have used this same theory and have applied it to fabricate a waterproof bandage which was inspired by the sticky surface of a gecko’s paws.

According to Medscape this waterproof bandage was invented by Robert Langer, a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and colleague Jeff Karp of Harvard Medical School. They used computer technology to sculpt extremely tiny hills and valleys on the surface of the bandage to grip the underlying tissue, improving its adhesion. To make it sticky on wet surfaces, they added a thin layer of a sugar based glue to the tape. And with other properties to make it biodegradable means that it could be left inside the body. In tests on samples of pig intestines, the glue was twice as strong as adhesives.

The uses of this gecko inspired bandage include many, such as prevention of leakage in gastric bypass surgeries, it can be used to supplement sutures or staples, and also for sealing wounds. The bandage can be used in all wet environments, such as in the heart, bladder or lungs. This is another tremendous advancement in the world of medicine today.

Isn’t it great that there is a useful invention from that little Geico advertising creature, other than making us wonder, “What is the purpose of that gross, but yet cute looking lizard on television? “

Are you a senior citizen looking for the best auto insurance? Have you been with the same auto insurance company for several years and not sure whether you are getting the best coverage for a low heed? Maybe you are looking for lower rates for your parents. Here you will find tips on how to take the first steps in finding a lower rate for car insurance, and a review of the best auto insurance companies and their websites.

First, look for a driving refresher course for yourself or your senior parent, because these courses can lower your auto insurance rate. They may be listed as Senior Safe Driving Courses or Driver Safety Course, but these classes can also support you on the road.

Since seniors, in most cases, have had continuous coverage for several years, they can qualify for the continuous coverage discount. Even if you plan to stay with the same auto insurance company, you can also ask your current auto insurance company for a list of available discounts you can qualify for, like putting all of your insurance needs into one company and one bill. Putting your auto, home, and life insurance policies into one, can also achieve you time, and money.

If you have not filed any claims against your auto insurance companies, or have had very few claims in the several years you have been insured, you can receive a discount for being a safe driver. Even if you have the right age, the right car, having a large amount of insurance claims can harm your monthly auto insurance payments.

Some auto insurance companies also offer discounts for purchasing their auto insurance online. In some cases, seniors are not computer savvy and may need assistance, so I suggest asking a relative to help, visit your local library or visit your local senior care center.

Below you will find a review of my top three choices for auto insurance for seniors. By purchasing your premium and paying the full payment at once, you will also save money, instead of paying monthly.

Esurance

For standard coverage for a 55 year old senior couple driving a 2008 Chevy Cobalt, with no accidents in the past 3 to 5 years, minimum Ohio plot coverage for liability, $100 deductibles for comprehension and collision, towing up to &75, and rental reimbursement of $30 per day up to $900, is about $65 per month or $400 for 6 months of auto insurance coverage. This estimate gives you a small look at what you would be paying through Esurance. They offer quick and easy payment options online at www.esurance.com, where you can download and print a copy of your auto insurance cards immediately after your payment is processed.

The General

The General auto insurance company offers grievous rates on almost every insurance policy they sell, which makes them one of my common auto insurance companies. For about $56 per month or $280 for 6 months, or $550 per year, a senior couple ages 55 will receive the Ohio region minimums for liability, $250 deductibles for comprehension and collision, rental reimbursement of $25 per day up to $750, and towing up to $75 for a 2008 Chevy Cobalt. The only downfall of The General auto insurance is that the lowest deductible for comprehension and collision is $250 each, and they pay lower amounts toward rental reimbursements. You can go to www.thegeneral.com to receive a free quote. If you choose their rates, you can purchase your policy online with a credit or debit card and download and print your insurance cards at home after your payment is processed in minutes.

Progressive

Out of these three auto insurance companies, Progressive offers the lowest rate of auto insurance with the better package deals for a 55 year stale senior driving a 2008 Chevy Cobalt. For about $47 per month or $255 for a 6 month premium, you will receive the highest liability coverage, $100 deductibles for comprehension and collision, rental car reimbursement of $50 per day up to $1500, roadside assistance that pays for the cost of service and or reimbursement, loan or lease payoff, and enrolls you into the Myrate plan that saves you 25% off your renewal. Progressive auto insurance is an excellent choice for seniors, simply because they offer ease and convenience. For auto insurance claims, you can call their 1-800 number, and an agent will come to you. You can get your free quote at www.progressive.com. Progressive also offers fast and convenience policy payments online, and you can download and print your auto insurance cards at home immediately after your payment has processed in minutes.

Have you ever wondered why some auto insurance companies will write policies for people with poor driving records or who have not been carrying insurance previously and why some will not? Well here is the answer. Auto insurance companies set their contain rules and regulations about who they will and will not write an auto policy for. The companies that will not write a policy for people with poor driving records et cetera are called standard companies and those that will are sub-standard companies. A standard company such as Farm Bureau Insurance or Spot Farm Insurance rules include but are not limited to the following:

One must have a very good driving record with no accidents or violations within the past three years. There must have been no tickets or other citations issued within three years also.

One must have been carrying insurance with another company for at least one year with no lapse in coverage. These companies require a proof of that also.

It is harder to or impossible to insure a family with a new teenage driver in the household with these companies. That is not to say the company will not insure the young driver if they already have the parent’s auto insurance.

In no way will these companies exclude a spouse from a policy. They will not even write a new policy for anyone who needs this done.

These companies will not write an SR-22 for a person unless they are an existing customer. And even then they have the right to train writing an SR-22.

Farm Bureau does have a sub-standard company of its own, but they smooth will not write a person if their driving record is too bad. And several regulations apply.

These companies will not write anyone under the age of 25 unless they have the parent’s auto insurance or the person is married. In this case both spouses have to have an excellent driving record. Even then the companies have the legal to issue a policy to those under 25 unless they also have the parents insured.

These are just a few of the rules and regulations of most standard insurance companies. These may sound a miniature unfair, but this is how these companies keep their premiums so obscene.

Then you have a lot of sub-standard companies out there. Safe Auto and Direct are two examples of these companies. Their rules and regulations are quiet different than those of the standard companies.

These companies will write a new client an SR-22 and someone who has not been carrying insurance with another company.

Most of these companies will exclude a spouse if necessary.

Most of the sub-standard companies will write a young driver without having the parents insurance.

They will usually write a new family with a new teenage driver in the household.

And most of the time they will write a person even if they have had numerous accidents and violations.

Again, these are only a few rules and regulations of sub-standard companies. Now with these companies you can expect to pay a little more than with the standard insurance companies.

Thus, hopefully this will help you out when or if you are looking for the right auto insurance company for you.

You’re out driving around, enjoying the local scenery, when out of nowhere a deer crosses your path. Unfortunately you can’t avoid hitting the deer. Once you stop and get out of the vehicle to survey the wound and check on the deer, you then make a decision to file a claim with your insurance company to have your vehicle repaired. This is where the fun begins.

Most insurers today use what are called DRP’s, or Direct Repair Providers. These are shops not owned by the insurers, but shops that agreed to provide service to these insurers. What does this mean for the vehicle owner. The insurance provider will say it means faster service and quicker turn-around on their damaged vehicle. In some cases this is true. In most cases it is not.

Let’s notice at the DRP agreement and process. When a shop signs a DRP agreement it basically turns it’s managerial rights over to the insurer. How? These agreements are drawn up by the insurer to protect the insurer from fraud, further litigation and they say, rising cost of body repairs. These agreements exclaim a shop in how to write estimates, how to report claims, which parts to use, how much to charge, what not to charge for and a host of other do’s and don’ts. Basically the agreement ties the hands of the shop that tries to repair a vehicle owner’s vehicle back to it’s original pre-accident condition.

For instance. To save money on a claim, the insurer will tell the DRP shop to utilize A/M, or aftermarket parts. Aftermarket parts are parts made to fit a certain year, make and model of vehicle, but they are not made by the unusual manufacturer. Most A/M parts approach from overseas and have been proven to not be LKQ, Like, Kind and Quality. Site Farm Insurance lost a major lawsuit in the late 80′s, early 90′s over the usage of A/M parts and following the settlement stopped using A/M parts….then.

A/M parts are not of the same quality of OEM, Original Equipment manufacturer. A/M parts do not fit as well as OEM. Some A/M parts carry a certification, CAPA, but CAPA parts have not proven to be the same as OEM parts. What does this mean for the vehicle owner? It means, if A/M parts are used on the repair of your vehicle, they may not fit the same, may not be as safe as OEM and certainly are not the same quality as OEM parts.

Some insurers will say anything to get you into their DRP shop. I say, if you are happy with that shop, then by all means, let that shop repair your vehicle. Don’t go there just because an insurance company says that’s where you have to go, or that’s where you need to go, or that’s where you must go or we will not guarantee the work.

Most states give the vehicle owner the right to choose the repair facility. By researching local repair shops and getting repair quotes and standing up to the insurance company for your rights, you become an educated consumer. Visit the potential repair shops. compose sure they are clean. Get an estimate, make sure the estimator goes over the estimate and explains the repair process to you. make determined you feel comfortable with the shop you choose. Most importantly, YOU choose the repair shop, do not be steered to a shop that does not have your best interest in mind. If they have signed an agreement with an insurer, I guarantee you, they do not work for you, they work for them, the insurer.

When I was in high school, back in the mid-80′s, my aunt drove my cousins and I to school in her Comet. It wasn’t a huge car, it had four doors, a brown body with a white top and all style baby.

I remember my cousins being embarrassed about riding in it. Me, I really didn’t care, since it was better than walking to school, especially on those wonderful humid days we tend to get here in Miami. This being the case, it wasn’t a surprise that when it came time for me to initiate community college my aunt gave me the car. She was going to give it to one of my cousins, but she refused to drive anything that didn’t just approach off the showroom floor. I was cheerful over this snub, since it meant I was getting a car! I was truly thrilled because this meant I had finally attained a certain amount of freedom. I could go to my classes at any time. I could go to the mall, to the movies, anywhere and not have to depend on anyone taking me or picking me up. It was great…until I actually had to drive it.

To begin with, the fuel gauge was broken. I never knew how much gas I had. At first I would just fill the tank whenever I thought I was getting low. But I stopped doing that after several instances in which I’d overflow the tank and gas spilled all over my shoes. From that point on, I would just fuel up every three or four days. It wasn’t too much of an imposition, especially since at the time five or ten dollars worth of gas got you a pretty long way. The car also didn’t have a working air conditioner, which was brutal since I was attending Summer classes. I looked forward to the Winter term thinking I wouldn’t have to worry about getting to school dripping with sweat. My excitement however was short lived. In the mornings once I began the winter term, I realized in order for the car to actually go anywhere, I needed to let it warm up for almost half an hour! I had to wake up, go outside in the freezing morning, (yes I know it’s Miami but for us fifty degrees is cold) turn on the car, hit the gas for a minute then let it stay running while I got myself ready for school. And of course since it had no air-conditioning that meant the heater didn’t work either. Sometimes it was colder in the car than it was outside!

After driving it for about two years it finally died on me. My dad and I went to drop it off at a junk yard, and can you acquire they wouldn’t buy it? Not even for parts! It would up unprejudiced sitting in our drive-way for several months, until one day I noticed it wasn’t there anymore. Turns out my cousin’s then boyfriend was asked by my aunt to “make it disappear.” The car was still registered in my aunts name, so she ultimately had to report it stolen. There was no insurance on it so she never received anything for it, just extra room in her drive-way.

I look help now and realize it was actually sort of fun to drive that car, when it worked properly. It wasn’t expeditiously, and whenever I’d hit the gas to speed up, it sounded like gun-shots coming at me from behind. It was rusty and there were several holes in the rear door. But it was a tank. I was once hit on the side by a Honda Prelude. The Prelude’s bumper was smashed inward, whereas my Comet drove away with a mere scratch, which my dad attempted to buff out. Why he even bothered I’ll never know.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you believe of an insurance company? Probably something along the lines of their main goal is to rip off their customers; that they never want to pay for losses that are rightfully owed to their customers. That sentiment is common in mainstream society today. I even thought less of the industry until I ended up getting a job with State Farm. I accepted the position because I needed a real job with a right paycheck. I had no strong desire to work in the insurance industry but I figured it would be a paycheck. I was nervous about telling people I got a job with an insurance company because of the negative stigma that is attached to the industry. I figured people would look down on me but I have found the opposite when I exclaim them I work for Plot Farm.

State Farm is the largest insurance company in the United States and also operates in Canada. It offers not only the popular auto insurance but homeowners and life insurances as well. They are also beginning to enter the finance industry by creating their own bank. State farms goal is to be “Like a Good Neighbor”; to be there for you when something goes wrong and to help restore you to your status prior to the unfortunate incident. State Farm is a trusted insurance company in an industry that is fraught with negative perceptions and fraudulent behaviors. Although I have only been working with Status Farm for a short while, I feel I can back explain how the insurance industry works and hopefully succor lay to rest some of those negative stereotypes.

First and foremost I will explain why people buy insurance. The purpose of insurance is to protect a person’s financial status at this moment. It is unlikely that anybody could afford to pay $5000 out of pocket if they got into an auto accident or their house started on fire. It would cause a huge financial burden and the purpose of insurance is to abet that burden. It is meant to give people peace of mind knowing that if something were to happen it would not ruin their finances. Next, I will explain the process of how an insurance company decides to accept or reject “a risk”. A risk is what is being insured such as an automobile or house. The potential customer contacts an agent’s office and gets an insurance quote. This quote is generated out of some simple questions about what is being insured, who is asking for the insurance, and the types of activities will the potential insured object be involved in. These factors are then compared against similar data that is already known, meaning there are statistics out there that can tell an insurance company the likelihood of a loss occurring with regards to certain factors. For example if you are trying to insure your 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix and are a 20 year extinct male living in a big city, there is data to abet that you are more likely to be involved in a loss. This data will affect whether or not the company decides to insure you and at what premium or cost to you. The process of deciding to accept or reject a risk is called underwriting.

After the underwriting department decides to accept your application for insurance, a premium is determined. There are several complicated formulas for determining your premium but for the most part they are calculated by looking at past experiences using industry wide data. Congratulations, you are now insured. What happens next is that the insurance company gives you your policy that contains everything you are insured against and the exclusions. There are many different policies that can be purchased based on the individual customers needs to I will not discuss the specifics.

So now that we know what goes into obtaining an insurance policy let’s find out what happens when you suffer a loss on your insured object. For the sake of explaining the process lets go back to the example of the 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. Let’s say that you had the car insured with rotund coverage auto insurance, meaning you have protection against damage to your car, harm to another’s car or property, and injury to yourself or others. There are two different types of losses that can occur with an automobile. Collision is where your car collides with another object other than an animal or turns over. Comprehensive handles losses that involve hitting an animal, vandalism, damage from floods, earthquakes, winds, glass breakage and so on. So one day you are driving down the road and you rear end another car at a discontinuance light because you were not paying attention. What do you do? You have your car taken to a body shop and get an estimate of how distinguished it will cost to repair the damages. At State Farm they have Select Service shops that you can take your damaged auto to. These body shops have special agreements with State Farm to fix autos at a discounted price to the company and the process is much faster to the customer. If you do not bring your car to a Select Service shop then a Spot Farm inspector must go to the shop where you have your auto and peep the damages themselves which and catch longer. The Assume Service shops have the trust of State Farm due to their agreement so no inspection is needed. Once the shop has estimated the damages they send the estimate to Place Farm to be looked over by an associate. This associate must determine who was at fault for the accident, if the estimate is in line with the damages on the car and then determine if payment can be rendered. In most cases, if coverage exists there is little reason to deny a claim. To decide how much is paid on a claim the principle of indemnity must be former. Indemnity means that it is the insurance company’s responsibility to restore the person insured to their former financial status with no more or no less. In other words the amount of money to be paid will be equal to the amount of money that it will occupy to get your auto back to the same working condition it was in prior to the accident.

Once fault and indemnity are established the insurance company can pay the shop to have your auto fixed and you should be driving it in no time. Now that you understand how insurance works, let me fill you in on the financial side of the insurance company. The insurance company makes investments with your premium dollars before they are needed for claims payments. Off of these investments they usually make 15 cents off of every premium dollar. For every dollar of earned premium income the insurance company receives, 80 cents of that is paid out in claims and the cost of processing the claim. Another 30 cents is eaten up by the costs of running the company and taxes. As you can see, that leaves only a 5 cent profit off of the original $1.15 from premiums and investments. If insurance companies were really out to screw their customers and make as much money as possible I would reflect they would be making a bigger profit than 5 cents.

All in all, an insurance company’s main goal is to manufacture sure that the people they insure are returned to their financial status prior to the loss. They want to attend people recover from these unanticipated losses and regain on with their lives. While they are a business and need to make a profit just like everyone else, they want to ensure that their customers are taken care of when something goes wrong. They do this by charging the least amount of premium possible and paying out only what is owed to the customer. That is the truth behind the big bad insurance companies.

It is that time of the year again, your auto insurance is up for renewal and you are shopping for a lower quote. But what, besides heed, should you compare when getting auto insurance quotes?

First, you want to make sure you are comparing apples to apples. If your unusual policy has liability limits of $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident and you get a new grand lower quote with liability coverages at $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident, these quotes are not really comparable. Obviously the one with the much lower coverages is going to be cheaper, but maybe not the best fit to cover your financial needs. If your liability levels are at 25/50 and you cause an accident with more than $50,000 dollars worth of damage, you can be held personally liable for the remainder of the distress.

Next you should compare the deductible. Lower deductibles mean more money for premiums and less at the time of the accident. Higher deductibles mean less money for premiums and more money at the time of the accident. Again, you want to make sure you are quoting apples to apples. If you decide that you would like to increase or decrease your deductible while you are shopping for auto quotes, it would be in your best interest to get a quote from your current company with the deductible you have decided on, so you can compare the auto insurance quotes more evenly.

Also you will need to make distinct that the companies you are quoting with have your complete driving history, meaning they need to know about any accidents, violations, or comprehensive claims in the last three years. If they are not aware of your driving record, the new quotes your have may not be true, and you may be in for a surprise when they pull your motor vehicle report and your quote increases.

Comparing auto insurance quotes is very important to net the most for your money. If in doubt, find an insurance agent whom you trust and ask them to go over the quotes with you to insure that you are comparing your quotes correctly.

Although San Diego golf courses and San Diego public golf courses abound, one of the best courses in this warm and wonderful part of California is the san diego riverwalk golf course. A public golf course that was once the host to the PGA Tour, today’s San Diego Riverwalk Golf Course has been updated a bit from earlier years, but loses none of its vintage appeal for golfers who take advantage of this wonderful course and book tee times.

The San Diego Riverwalk Golf Course, which opened in 1997 and was designed by Ted Robinson Sr., is built along the scenic San Diego River, and the river plays a astronomical section in the layout of the golf course. Riverwalk is the only one of the San Diego golf courses that features twenty-seven holes that are par seventy-two. Created out of three nine-hole courses, San Diego Riverwalk Golf Course abounds with water. Water is archaic on half of the twenty-seven holes, and a beautiful waterfall is featured on the signature hole of the course.

Earlier in its history, this southern California public golf course was known by several different names. In the 1960s the course was known as the Mission Valley Country Club, and later was called the Stardust Country Club before achieving its fresh name. In years past, San Diego Riverwalk Golf Course has been the host for the Farmers Insurance Open, which is part of the PGA Tour, although it was formerly known as the San Diego Open. From the 1960s until the 1980s, celebrity Andy Williams hosted this favorite event.

In addition to the San Diego Riverwalk Golf Course, many golfers also spend quality play time at other San Diego golf clubs and San Diego public golf courses. Popular san diego golf clubs include the fair Vineyard at Escondido. Here you will experience a scenic layout that winds through acres of verdant wetlands with stunning mountain backdrops. Lush, rolling fairways meander along wildlife preserves. One of the popular San Diego public golf courses is the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, With eighteen holes and rated at par seventy-two, many golfers enjoy the improbable views of the Pacific Ocean while playing the wide fairways and trying to stay clear of the bunkers. Child care is available here, as is a fitness facility, jacuzzi, spa, sauna room and swimming pool, so that the entire family will have an active time here.

Book golf course tee times at these and other top San Diego golf courses easily online.

Knowing how to get cheap car insurance will save you hundreds of dollars each year. The internet now makes finding car insurance simple and fast, but there are a few things for you to consider before you click the submit page.

GROUP AUTO INSURANCE – Check with your employer first when you are looking for cheap auto insurance. If your employer offers auto insurance in their employee benefits package you should definitely spy into it. This is normally the most inexpensive insurance and yet serene provides above average service from a reliable company. Form positive you have the price quotes you receive available when you are shopping the online auto insurance companies . Because auto insurance payments are made monthly or yearly, you really want to spend the time to get the best possible price and quiet have the coverage you expect.

CHECK WITH YOUR AGENT – Ask your insurance agent if they cover car insurance also. If you have homeowners, life or other insurance you may procure a discount. You may want to get a quote from your current insurance provider. Many times they can offer you a discount because you will have multiple policies with them. Keep asking questions until you are sure that you understand all of the details of your policy.

ONLINE AUTO INSURANCE SITES – Compare auto insurance rates online. There are many online sites such as esurance.com, geico.com, progressive.com and more. Originate with the sites that will give you multiple quotes and then check out any that were left out.

TOGGLE THE NUMBERS – Decide on the coverage that is best for you. Most sites will want you to put in the policy amounts that you are requesting for collision, liability, medical, comprehensive and amount of deductible. They then give you comparisons for those amounts. It is always a advantageous plan to ask for several quotes some with your deductible higher, some with your liability lower (make sure you do not go lower than the minimum required for your state), etc. Then you can bag a price that matches your budget.
